Employee Spotlight: Laura Vergano
Congratulations to Laura Vergano on being a valued CL&A employee. You are an outstanding member of our team, and we couldn’t do it without you! We are honored to highlight you in this month’s employee spotlight.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a native New Yorker-a rarity these days. Tourists love me, but they wonder why I’m so nice, which is contrary to what they’ve heard. I live in downtown Manhattan with my life partner, Fred and our 25 pound cat Matisse. Matisse is on a diet, but I can’t tell if it’s working because he’s too heavy to pick up to weigh!

What is your role at CL&A?
I am Associate Director of Clinical Services. I supervise a team of four case managers and one team leader. They are so good, we have been called “the A team”! I am very grateful for their dedication and their positive spirit.

What would people never guess you do in your role?
I’ve become known for the cookies I bring to supervision every week. We all work hard, so I think we deserve treats.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy supervising and mentoring others about their career choices. I try to shield the team from negativity as much as I can, so they can move forward and do their work. Believe it or not, I also like reading CPRS notes. Reading about Veterans getting their apartments can really be very touching.

How did you first learn about CL&A?
When I was job searching, a friend of mine who worked for VOA recommended HUD-VASH to me. I saw an ad on Indeed and applied. After my interview with Marc, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

What do you like most about CL&A?
Most of all, I love the people I work with. I appreciate all the support and enjoy all the laughs we have. We are a tight knit group and we work very well together.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?
Well, I am the queen of reinventing myself. I started my career working as an art director in advertising (think Mad Men), then went back to school and became an art therapist and later went back again for my master’s in social work. My job as expressive therapist within the 30th Street Men’s Homeless shelter was probably the most interesting.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I enjoy all the culture New York has to offer-movies, museums, theaters, ballet, jazz and of course restaurants. If money were no object, I’d be out every night. I also love to travel.

What is one thing you couldn’t live without?
Definitely, coffee. I grew up drinking coffee as a child with my Cuban grandparents, so this is a serious addiction!

What is your hidden talent?
I enjoy all creative activities. I’ve taken classes in pottery, jewelry making and I also knit and crochet.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
People stopping on the subway stairs to look at their phones.

What is your favorite movie and book?
For old movies, Woodie Allen’s, Annie Hall and most recently, Spike Lee’s Black Klansman.

I read a lot. I really liked “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt
